Essentially acting as a feature-length riff on The Twilight Zone’s “It’s a Good Life,’ co-writer/director Elbert van Strien’s “Marionette” — which takes its title quite literally — is a moody Scotland-based thriller concerning a young boy who claims that he can control individuals thoughts and actions. Featuring a confident performance from newcomer Elijah Wolf, “Marionette” is a bit less than the sum of its individual parts.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American distribution rights to At the Ready, the documentary from Maisie Crow that follows three El Paso teenagers who embark on careers in law enforcement as the debates surrounding immigration and police reform in America reach fever pitches. The doc will be released in theaters and on digital platforms October 22.
Crow’s film focuses on students at El Paso’s Horizon High School, 10 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, who are part of a criminal justice club, which includes mock-ups of drug raids and active-shooter takedowns as they eye careers with the Border Patrol and in policing and customs enforcement. They soon discover their choices may clash with the values and people they hold most dear.
Crow, Hillary Pierce and Abbie Perrault are producing. Gravitas previously released Pierce’s immigration doc The River and the Wall.
Gravitas’ Huggins and Tony Piantedosi negotiated the deal...

The atmospheric story of a boy who says he can control his therapist’s actions with his thoughts focuses too much on philosophical questions
Therapist Dr Marianne Winter (Thekla Reuten) hopes to escape her own traumatic past in upstate New York by taking up a position treating troubled children in a remote Scottish town. However, the forbidding Victorian municipal building that houses her new consulting room offers no sanctuary, and she’s soon unsettled by a 10-year-old patient (Elijah Wolf), who claims he can control her actions with his thoughts.
Repression (previously entitled Marionette) gamely endeavours to live up to the Hitchcockian promise of its title. It started out as a Dutch-language short by director Elbert van Strien 27 years ago, and here he knowingly utilises all the gothic potential of a new setting. As one visitor to Marianne’s rooms remarks: “Isn’t it a bit depressing? All this panelling,...

"You have to kill him... Before he kills you..." Signature Ent. in the UK has released an official trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Repression, made by Dutch filmmaker Elbert van Strien, and shot mostly in Scotland. This was originally titled Marionette before the update for its VOD debut this fall. Repression is described as "a gripping and twisty Hitchcock-esque thriller set in Scotland with a staller British cast," including Peter Mullan and Rebecca Front. The film tells the story of a therapist, Marianne Winter played by Dutch actress Thekla Reuten, who loses her grip on reality when a ten-year-old boy claims he can control her future. It also features Bill Paterson, Sam Hazeldine, Emun Elliott, Pearl Chanda, and Elijah Wolf as the boy Manny. This has some intense close-ups - a mix of super wide angle close-up shots (nearly fish eye) and regular close-ups. I want to know...
