Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. Amazon is teaming with Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner to develop a Legally Blonde TV series. Gossip Girl and The O.C. grads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached to write the TV offshoot, whose premise is being kept under wraps. Schwartz and Savage and their Fake Empire banner, Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Neustadter, Marc Platt and Amazon MGM Studios are all producing the potential offshoot.
It’s unclear if Witherspoon has any plans to reprise her role as Elle Woods in the potential TV series, which comes as Amazon has been scouring the MGM library to for titles to revive since acquiring the storied studio a few years ago. The streamer and Hello Sunshine are looking to turn the Legally Blonde films into a multiple-show...

The team behind Netflix’s hit Fool Me Once is reuniting for a new series — at a different streamer.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered Lazarus, a limited series from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst. The drama will star Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six) as a forensic psychologist who returns home after his father’s suicide and becomes entangled in a set of cold case murders. Bill Nighy, playing the lead character’s late father, and Alexandra Roach, as Claflin’s sister, also star.
Lazarus is based on an original idea from best-selling author Coben and Brocklehurst, who are writing the series together. The limited series will be Coben’s second at Prime Video, which ran (and then canceled) Shelter last year.
“Lazarus is a gripping series that captures your attention from the very beginning,” said Heather Curtis, current series executive, pan-English scripted SVOD TV at Amazon MGM Studios.

“Goodfellas” may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” but the Martin Scorsese crime drama served as inspiration for Nzingha Stewart, who directed four of the Amazon Prime Video series’ final five episodes. The back half of the limited series showcased the titular band at the height of its fame in the 1970s. More money meant more drugs, more problems, more messiness. It’s a far cry from the first half of the series, when the upstart group was just trying to land its big break, and showrunner Scott Neustadter encouraged Stewart to make her block completely different from the first one.
“I think it was always probably floating in the ether because I did watch ‘The Last Waltz,’ which was Scorsese’s documentary on a rock band just in me doing research on shooting live concerts. So it might...

The cast of Daisy Jones and The Six was supposed to go on tour to perform the music from the Prime Video series. Star Riley Keough shared a video of those rehearsals before heading to the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on January 15, saying the 2023 Hollywood strikes ended that dream. Co-star Sam Claflin confirmed as much on the Emmys red carpet but said hope isn’t lost. “We were rehearsing to do live performances, but then the writers’ strike happened. We wanted to be in solidarity and support of the writers, and then the actors’ strike happened, so, of course, we couldn’t get involved,” Claflin told Variety (see below), adding that “maybe one day” they can get the band back together. Daisy Jones & The Six follows is loosely inspired by the creation of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic Rumours album. Keough plays the titular Daisy Jones, with Claflin playing The Six...

The 2023 Emmy Awards finally took place on Monday night, with series like The Bear, Beef and Succession winning big.
The ceremony, hosted by Anthony Anderson and held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was postponed for months due to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes. Thus, to be considered for an award, a television show, limited series or made-for-tv film must have been released between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.
The National Active Members of the Television Academy voted on the awards from August 18 to August 28, 2023.
Succession walked away with seven wins for its final season, including Best Drama and recognition for actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen. The show also received awards for Best Directing for a Drama Series for Mark Mylod and Best Writing for a Drama Series for Jesse Armstrong.

In a normal year, the 2023 Emmy Awards would have actually taken place in 2023. But last year was anything but normal in Hollywood, and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the award ceremony’s postponement to January 15, 2024.
Fans of Succession, The Bear, and Beef had a lot to celebrate as Emmy voters threw most of the awards in their direction. Succession and The Bear tied with six wins each, and Beef wasn’t far behind with five.
Highlights included Christina Applegate’s surprise appearance on stage to a standing ovation, Carol Burnett presenting to Quinta Brunson (the first Black actress to win as Lead Actress in a Comedy since 1981), and Niecy Nash-Betts’ powerful acceptance speech for Dahmer. There were also cast reunions and Sir Elton John finally received the E portion of Egot for his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special.

Way back in (checks notes) July last year, we reported on the Emmy nominations, noting that the strikes could delay it. Welp, delay it they did, and the 2023 ceremony has just happened in Los Angeles on Monday night. The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.

Sam Claflin Is ‘100%’ Open to Returning to ‘The Hunger Games’: ‘I Would Be All in for Finnick’s Dad’
Sam Claflin told Variety that he would be “100%” open to returning to “The Hunger Games” franchise.
Speaking with Marc Malkin during Variety On the Carpet, presented by Directv, Claflin opened up about his reaction to the prequel film “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and the potential for his widely beloved character Finnick to make an appearance in future “Hunger Games” projects.
Though he is willing to return to the dystopian world of Panem, Claflin fears his age might be a detriment: “I don’t know if there’s room for me to go back. I’m too old now.”
The actor did add, however, “I’ve heard rumors that people are asking for a Finnick prequel, and all I’m gonna say is that I would be all in for Finnick’s dad.”

Suki Waterhouse channels Edith Piaf in the video for “Omg,” her shimmery new single.
The singer, model, and Daisy Jones & the Six actress had teased the new song on social media for days, finally releasing it. “It’s really, really the best way to start my year,” she tells Rolling Stone, on a call from Los Angeles. “I’ve been holding onto it for a while.”
The track, co-written with Natalie Findlay and Jules Apollinaire, is a synthy, sleazy rocker with the kind of anthemic chorus that will be in your head for days.
