It starts out as your ordinary vulgar and stupid sex comedy, then halfway through it shifts gears and becomes a downbeat drama, complete with a bitter ending. Apparently, it has a certain emotional value for those who first saw it when it was originally released, back in 1982, but if you watch it now for the first time, it probably won't have the same impact. It's visually ugly, for one thing, and the young actors, though earnest, are a bit too bland. (**)
