Review of Permission

Permission (1987)
Film set to poems
13 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Ijaazat is an unusual movie in the sense that it sees poetry in ordinary lives and events. The synopsis is fairly simple: A man marries a woman recommended by his family, even though he has a soft spot for another woman. His continuing friendship with the other woman leads to misunderstandings in his marriage, eventually leading to separation and divorce. To cap his cup of misfortune, the other woman dies in an accident trying to save his marriage. The characters are ordinary except for the other woman. But the film sees them all through a beautiful but melancholic prism, an effect that is highlighted by using upbeat lyrics for the ordinary wife, and a contemplative, sad lyrics for the other woman. The viewer leaves the film remembering the songs and certain scenes, such as the honeymoon at a lake with plenty of trees in it, but without any leaves, the other woman's death by her own scarf getting caught in the wheel hub of her moped.
