Record of Lodoss War is unique in the fact that the series uses many elements of Western culture fantasy. The series contains knights, mages, dwarves and elves. The plot may seem like typical Dungeons and Dragons fair, but after a few episodes, the story picks up and becomes more than what you would find in a normal D&D campaign. While the animation is admittedly stiff in places, the story is very well done and the OAV series was popular enough warrant the making of a full television series.
