Ratcatcher (1999)
7/10
Dostoyevsky,not Dickens.

I am a fan of the Scottish wave of somewhat down-n-dirty films. I am a big fan of "Trainspotting". I am a big fan of "Acid House". This film is comparable to neither of those. This is "Billy Elliot" without the Prozac. The other films had quick pace and good humored guts. This film has bad smells, head lice and garbage bags filled with disgusting offal at its core. With the ludicrous subtitles, complete with slang spellings, one might imagine that one was viewing a low budget pro-Soviet film about current conditions in Moscow. Despite these objections, I feel the subject matter is important. I think every millionaire on the planet should be strapped down and forced to watch this film, before being given the option to vote for Right Wing candidates. Perhaps its niche is in the realm of Behavioral Therapy for politicians and those who decry the need for social welfare programs. In any case, I recommend it conscientiously, but I won't rush to rent it when it comes out on video.
