What a sweet movie!

What a sweet movie! My hat is off to the unemployed critic for his/her excellent review. I saw it at the local budget theater with a sparse audience, but enjoyed it all the same. The movie itself is formulaic, the roots of which can be traced all the way back to Shirley Temple. It also reminds me of the Gidget movies from the early 60's: wholesome, harmless, good clean fun! Remember that? In fact, 40 years ago, one of them was called Gidget Goes To Rome. I laughed at the tween high jinks and thoroughly enjoyed Hilary Duff as Lizzie. I've never seen the TV show it's based on, but I enjoyed the movie all the same. Rarely does any movie focus on the inner thoughts of young people, like the cartoon device in Lizzie. Often times, young people serve the plot in movies, rather then being characters that are served by the plot. This movie was an excellent showcase for the soon-to-be 16 year old Hilary Duff. She has acting talent, comedic ability, pop vocal talent, and charm to spare. And, of course, she's as cute as a button too. The script was obviously beneath her talent, but there is no reason in the world for any girls (or boys) not to see it. And parents, you may find yourselves enjoying it too. Let's hope Hilary Duff doesn't turn into the next Britney Spears. **1/2 of 4 stars.
