Review of Parineeta

Parineeta (2005)

Nice family drama but poor climax
8 August 2005
This film is a nice entertainer that focuses on various relationships by revisiting the golden era of what was the diamond of the British Empire, 1960s Calcutta. Vidhu Vinod Chopra does a sensational job in mastering yet another work with a good script, great performances, beautiful cinematography, and wonderful music making watching this movie in the theaters an enjoyable experience. Saif and Sanjay did a good job. Dia Mirza is very impressive. Characters were very well developed. None of them were exaggerated and their enactments were void of any flamboyance or melodrama. Without any extremities, the characters were kept very real and well developed, which is an extremely difficult task. My favorite part of the movie is undoubtedly Rekha's song. Her grace and sensuality are yet to be given any competition. The seductive tunes and gorgeous choreography to Kaisi Paheli Hai Yeh Zindagi brings out the social, affluent culture of this era where eating dinner out on a Saturday night included cabaret, music, dance, dressing up, and long, round-table conversations. Songs are good and appeal to all ages. The only major weakness in this movie is the climax. It is extremely disappointing and very "filmi," or unrealistic.
