A dirty P.I. flick.
Dirty figuratively due to the jokes and nudity. Dirty literally because some of those rooms were NASTY! Allen Garfield shows that there was a time when he could lead a film adequately. He dresses like Darren McGavin did in 'Night Stalker.' Which began the same year I believe.
Garfield does an OK job here. He combines a 'go get 'em' attitude with typical human weakness. And it takes guts for a man that looks like him to do frontal nudity.
As P.I. flicks go, it's just normal. That's not a bad thing though. Some suspense but no real revelations.
And director Avildsen would later get an Oscar for 'Rocky.' Here's a good early one for his fans.
