Review of Water

Water (I) (2005)
9/10
Sad, deep, beautiful
14 January 2007
Visually beautiful, this movie is very worth seeing. It is sad, haunting even. India is such a different country and culture than ours. I learned something about another culture, way of life. Though i imagine India is a country of great contrasts and this points the way. It is poetic, romantic, sad, and somewhat redeeming, though not a Hollywood ending. It shows the sad plight of woman on our planet. It remains a mystery, why the fear of the feminine, which has been going on for thousands of years. Although the film is set in 1936, I sense not that much has changed in the rural parts of much of the planet in regards to womans rights. Perhaps film is one of the great ways we can learn about problems around the globe. Each country has film makers dealing with their own cultural blinders. From what I read, this director went through some scary times making the film.
