Review of Oridathu

Oridathu (1987)
9/10
A terrific story about a series of changes in a village
20 January 2007
Set in a remote part of Travancore-Cochin, Oridathu tells the story of a village where electricity arrives for the first time. Accustomed to more earthy resources of energy, the villagers perceive this modern innovation as a threat to their natural way of life. The film depicts the narrow mindedness and hypocrisy of village life with humor. What the film underlines, is the necessity for basic ethical premises, whatever one is engaged in. The film strictly is not on the effects of modernity or modern technology. This is just incidental - the theme could be anything. In this instance the overseer is a man without any scruples - and that is the central point.
