I Like This Film
17 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Back in 1983, I had the misfortune to miss out on seeing this film when a mate rang me to view it only for me to be on holiday. I never got to see it until it's re-release in 2002! But it was worth the wait.

I assume fellow zombie fans have their own rules regarding how the zombies act, look, etc., and I'm no exception. But this film did break one - only humans should become zombies. The first zombie in this film is a rat, which doesn't make sense as the film proceeds into the jungle, showing a lot of wildlife footage, but no other zombie animals. But at least the director wisely chose not to show the rat chewing on its victim, but rather a comical shot of the man clearly squirting a bottle of tomato sauce under his uniform!

The zombies in this film look like normal people with grey shoe polish buffed onto their faces along with a smidgeon of blood, and they seem to walk in the same unthreatening manner. I mean, you would really have to stand completely still to be bitten by them. Twice, Zantoro dances in the middle of a horde of zombies and they kinda dance slowly around him when they could easily move in for the kill. Also, the "bite" effect is obviously a piece of meat being held against the actor's limb. A clever but cheap idea.

The music is also funny at times; twanging synthesiser to love story piano. But all in all, I like this film. It's cheap, badly dubbed and acted, strange locations, but plenty of zombie attacks and gore. Just fast forward the jungle scene as it's far too long.

My niggles :

  • if the Hope Centre is deliberately creating a virus to turn people into zombies, then why was it damned as a complete failure? - Osborn puts down his guns and dons a tutu and top hat and dances when you just know there will be zombies around the corner. - Wildlife footage...not required! - One of the native zombies in the jungle is wearing a shirt! - It is established early in the film that zombies die only with a bullet to the head but they still waste ammo to the bodies. - Lia gets covered in blood but does not wipe it off. - The soldiers are on holiday but still require orders. Hmm.... - The strongest zombie is an old lady, who wrestles London to the ground. - They shoot the kid zombie up against the jeep without damaging it or blowing it up. - Why didn't Josie and her husband (who fell into such a deep sleep not even the removal of his intestines could wake him) become zombies? - Max didn't become a zombie even though he died in the lift along with Zantoro. - Nice house. But why check out a house?
