Bender gets a downgrade
30 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After the release of the latest robot model, Robot 1-X, Bender is not happy; the new machine is efficient, environmentally friendly and honest; not qualities one associates with Bender! After finally admitting that he is scared of 1-X he agrees to have an upgrade to make him compatible. Roberto is in front of him in the queue to be upgraded and rants on about how he hates 1-X models and intends to stab them... until he is upgraded then he claims to love 1-X. Bender becomes unsure about the procedure and as it starts he escapes and jumps from the nearest window. Landing by the river he fashions a boat out of a no boating sign before rowing off to a small desert island. Here he discovers a group of fellow obsolete robots; one is powered by a waterwheel, one uses old cartridges and the other has a tiny 2k memory. Over time Bender comes to appreciate the lifestyle and decides that he will downgrade... and fight against technology.

This was a decent episode with some good laughs although the middle section suffers somewhat from only featuring one of the regular cast. The story was fairly good and I particularly liked Roberto's cameo. The obsolete robots were okay but not as funny as I'd have hoped; I did like the water powered robot though... very innovative. Bender's downgraded form was rather fun; especially when it was visited by a woodpecker. The ending had a fun twist that worked better than most times this device is used. Overall not a classic episode but entertaining enough.
