Warning: Spoilers
Somewhere deep in the middle of what might have been an idea for a comedy, there was a good film. It didn't quite make it to the finished stage, instead we're left with what looks like filmed rehearsals, and one is wondering what could have been. After all, there is Butler, Zeta Jones, Greer, and Quaid, trying to work with this material.

Butler plays a ex-soccer celebrity who is in need of finding a way back to success and his own family. Using soccer is an interesting way to make a point here, and Butler is good at showing the frustration and nostalgia in his character. At times, he is even on target while looking confused by the constant pursue of some of the team's mothers. Once again, this feels like there could have been a bit more developed. There is plenty of wasted potential.

Of all the supporting characters, Zeta-Jones is the one with the most promise, and it makes you wonder where this actress has been. She gives her assertive mother with plenty of mysterious qualities and spins an element of danger which could have made the film more interesting. The camera loves her, and she stands out in the pretty generic soccer scenes.

The most puzzling pairing is that of Thurman and Quaid, another underdeveloped set of characters. Thurman looks fantastic and is someone who has done wonders in supporting roles, but all she does here is pout and look frustrated. Quaid enjoys his part a bit more and does the best he can. It's actually refreshing to see him play the bad guy and do a decent job at it.

Maybe someone will remake it and add a few more details to it.
