11137903 "Sick" depicts the life (and death) of Bob Flanagan in a very raw and powerful way. What made this documentary so wonderful is how straight forward and natural Bob is about his BDSM practises and his struggle with Cystic Fibrosis. Although the practises are very extreme and perhaps these are not acts that all BDSM practitioners would engage in (Bob does call himself a SUPERmasochist) one can get a real fix of what living out this lifestyle involves. Also, a raw and in depth portrayal of a sadomasochist relationship that contains both joys and struggles is examined. There are extremely graphic scenes which are definitely not for the faint of heart. It was clear to see that Bob needed masochism in his life to focus on as well he claims it had prolonged his life. Because he knew he was going to die (at a sooner time than most others) he was not afraid and had the mind set to use his body to the fullest while he could. I believe the pain that Bob experienced while engaging in BDSM allowed him to view his disease as more minor or feel as though he had some control over what his body went through. The scene that depicts Bob's death is extremely moving and the depth of the relationship and love between him and his partner is clearly seen. Although this is tough to watch, it goes to show that sadomasochistic relationship can be deeply rooted in love and not just based on the premise of getting off by harming another person. Overall, "Sick" is a wonderful and eye opening documentary on the life of BDSM practitioners worth watching.
