"Helmets? HEL-METS!! James Bond doesn't need a f---"
27 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
"-ing helmet!" Only he actually did, according to the narrator of this four-minute THUNDERBALL behind-the-scenes piece, BILL SUITOR: THE ROCKET MAN MOVIES. Mr. Suitor says that because he cut the grass for a rocket belt inventor named Wendell, and because he joined the U.S. Army around this time, he was one of the stunt men who stood in for Sean Connery to actually perform James Bond's escape from the French Château amid THUNDERBALL's opening credits. Connery shot his close-ups with a dummy rocket belt and NO HELMET and then left France for Nassau BEFORE a "second unit" came to the château with a REAL rocket belt. Told by the "continuity girl" that Connery had NOT worn a helmet, the Army replied that helmets were MANDATORY for soldiers OR civilian stunt men. So following all his spear gun warfare, Connery had to backtrack from Nassau to France to put on a helmet for his close-ups!
