Warning: Spoilers
"Girls Can Play"....but they don't play a lot in this film. It would have been fascinating to see a 1937 film focusing on an all-female professional softball team, but what we really get here is a rather tired crime story centered on two men: a gangster pretending to have gone straight, and the newspaper reporter who is trying to expose him. The guy playing the reporter is pretty nondescript, while Jacqueline White, the main female lead, is competent but unexceptional (kudos to her, however, for doing most of her softball action herself). Perhaps the main point of interest of this movie for any viewer today is the presence of a young and cute Rita Hayworth in a significant role; she doesn't yet show the star quality that would catapult her to fame only a few years later. One clever line, by the gangster: "I won't count to three before I shoot, I don't know so many numbers!". ** out of 4.
