Only known because of its director

Warning: Spoilers
"Koza" or "Cocoon" is a black-and-white movie from 20 years ago and it was written and directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the possibly most important Turkish director of the 21st century so far. This short film was nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or in Cannes, but lost out. However, this was only the beginning of the director's triumphant years with the Cannes Film Festival. He has been nominated so often there and won several times with the highlight taking home the big prize last year.

Do not worry if you don't speak Turkish. Neither do I and this film does not require you to. There is no dialog in here. And yet maybe this is also why I did not really like this watch. Nothing was happening is usually not a valid criticism, but here it applies because it also applies to the artistic impact of this short film which was basically non-existent to me. It's a very slow-moving 18 minutes and I cannot recommend it. It looks much older than mid-90s actually. I read that the filmmaker was working as a photographer before this one and it shows occasionally, especially at the beginning. Here he was still searching for his greatness as a movie maker, but looking at how many awards he won afterward, he probably found it soon after this one. Yet "Koza" is not really worth a watch. thumbs down.
