The OA (2016–2019)
4/10
A lot of buildup, with no fulfillment.

I really don't like shows like this. Forget about personal interest in genres & theme, I think we can all agree that we don't like it when a TV show lies to us. Specifically in this case, The OA teases the viewer with mystery, with wonder, with a hint of the supernatural, a glimpse into the human condition. It builds this interest up and up, tricking the viewer into following the tasty trail of breadcrumbs.

And then it shits all over you. None of the questions you have are answered, plot lines are built up and forgotten at the whim of the writer, and after the show ends, you are left with a confused, empty feeling. You can go back and watch again to see if you missed some crucial information, but no, the ending (without giving away any information, though I should say there PRACTICALLY IS NONE) essentially says "Tune in next season to find out what happens!"

It's cheap and dirty, and I don't know if the writers did it on purpose in order to keep the viewers watching, or whether they had no idea how to conclude the mess of forgotten plot lines & character development that they had built upon so much.

I would not recommend watching this show. The acting is great, the cinematography is great, some of the dialogue is great. But every episode goes on a tangent and digresses into a new plot line or character development, and you think it will be re-visited later, and fulfilled. But it never happens. If you want to watch this, go for it, but just be ready for complete disappointment as it comes to a close.
