As was the case with the mid-season crossover, the first part of the musical crossover with Flash wasn't really a crossover at all. In fact, it was yet another instance where they just threw the tease in at the end of the episode so that we would tune in for The Flash episode the next night. For people like myself that already watch The Flash, that made for a bit of a disappointing episode.
With that said, I never would have thought I enjoyed a Winn story more than the main arc of the episode, especially considering it centered around his underdeveloped girlfriend. Having him get conned into stealing artwork by his own girlfriend? Yeah that accentuated just how lame of a character he is. But this plot also provided some more cool team-up fights between Guardian, Alex, and Maggie's crew. Wow, I never thought I'd be saying cool in the same sentence as Guardian. But it was honestly a solidly crafted episode in terms of the action.
On the other hand, the weekly romance problems between Mon-El and Kara is getting really frustrating. I understand that she's upset with him not telling her about his Daxum history, but to once again break off the relationship was just lazy. She claims that love is hard and needs work, but refuses to ever put forth that work. Even though I'm not a huge fan of the character, Mon-El clearly approaches the relationship in a more realistic and mature way. I'm tired of complaining about the romance week to week, especially considering it started off feeling cute and refreshing.
So we got the end tag with the Music Meister, played by Benoist's Glee co-star Darren Criss, sending Kara into a dreamy version of Earth-1? It definitely didn't feel entirely cohesive with the rest of the episode, but a nice tease for the Flash episode nonetheless. In all, I was not impressed with the Daxum subplot, but somewhat entertained by the Winn storyline. Quite a shock, indeed.
