Supergirl: Ace Reporter (2017)
Season 2, Episode 18
8/10

After a month off, Supergirl returned with a pretty solid outing. This time, mostly focusing on Lena Luthor and her ex-boyfriend tech genius turned (possible) villain.

This was definitely a "villain of the week" type episode for Supergirl, though I think we would be stupid not to think that Lena's arc in this episode alone won't have a significant impact on where her character goes the rest of the season. I've been on the train of thinking that she would be better served as a friend to Kara that has a slight dark side, instead of going full-blown Luthor. But knowing CW, she will almost certainly be a big bad at some point or another.

Her boyfriend Jack, played by established CW actor Rahul Kohli, proved to be a more than worthy villain of the week and even had more depth than most of the villains this show claims as "bigger bads". But clearly, he was merely there so that Lena could be fleshed out a bit more. Meanwhile, Kara was busy investigating Jack about his developments with 'Biomax' and the questionable uses of nanobots. This whole thing felt like a rip-off of Big Hero 6, but at least it gave Kara a different type of foe to take down.

Winn, Lyra, and James were off doing their crime-fighting shenanigans in National City when all of a sudden Lyra is a capable fighter and good enough to fight in the field? Huh? I'm not sure where this came from or why this is even a storyline, but sure? The only thing I can think of is that the writers want to incorporate Lyra a bit more so that when she inevitably gets killed off at the end of the season, we care for her and Winn? This all felt rather silly and pointless.

A solid twist on the villain and more Lena material made this episode of Supergirl another valuable entry this season. However, consistency is the goal here, and the show needs to keep impressing or it may lose my interest once again.

+Lena gets a lot to do

+Villain was solid, albeit a Big Hero 6 rip-off

-Why is Lyra fighting in the field?
