When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.
"7:15 A.M" sees Season 1 back on track, after the season stumbled a little with "True North". With the sole exception of some wooden and obvious dialogue for Anastasia Griffith (who still makes much of what she has and gives a performance of considerable emotional weight), the writing and character detail, the latter being the richest it's been yet of the season, has come on such a long way.
It is a very handsomely mounted episode, settings and costumes that are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie-cutter. The special effects, after being pretty bad in "True North", are superior here. It is photographed beautifully and there were some make-up that suited the characters perfectly. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable main theme.
The writing is humorous, very touching and has a lot of character nuance, particularly with Snow and Charming and Mary Margaret and David. How their relationship is portrayed and David's moral dilemma is done very well. Likewise with the storytelling, where the real world and fantasy world parallel is adeptly handled.
Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas are immensely charming and heartfelt, their chemistry is electric too and the writers help give a deeper understanding of their characters.
In short, excellent and sees Season 1 back on track. 9/10 Bethany Cox
