GO ASK ALICE is a 1970s-era reworking of the 'sensation' films that were all the rage in the 1930s; namely, social dramas that were designed to act as warnings for viewers about the perils of drug addiction, prostitution, alcoholism and the like. This one's a timely TV movie in which an innocent teenage girl becomes drawn into a world of drugs, drug abuse, and drug dealing. It's a film that's slightly ahead of its time, feeling quite stark and hard-hitting at times, and with a cast who work hard to bring the material to life. I did enjoy seeing William Shatner hiding behind facial hair and glasses playing the father. The film is never explicit, being a TV movie after all, but it does manage to be rather shocking and it puts the message across well.
