Bear Grylls meets Survivor
10 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Get Out Alive" is clearly an attempt by Bear Grylls to snatch some of the "Survivor" audience: it starts with 10 teams, there is an elimination of a team at the end of each episode based on how the teams perform during each of their 8 separate journeys into the wilds of New Zealand, and in the series finale 1 team is awarded the grand prize: half a million dollars! There is even a combined reward/immunity challenge in every episode. The results, while lacking the strategy of Survivor (Bear and Bear alone decides which team will go home) and the spectacle of "Man Vs. Wild", are engaging. The show has action, emotion, soul-searching - even suspense, especially in the last few episodes where the obviously weaker teams have been eliminated and the strongest remain. Bear's judgment is fair and knowing, and the winners are both surprising and deserving. *** out of 4 for the show as a whole.
