Wild, Wacky and Very Beautiful
9 June 2019
I knew zero about this movie before I selected it from my Mill's Creek boxed set of "Chiller" movies and was startled how it just jumped out from the rest of the jumble of B movies included in this collection. The movie is beautifully photographed, lit, and at first it's fascinating to watch this story of a journalist who has come to investigate the goings on in this mental hospital. But after about thirty minutes, it all became just too bloody much. The movie slows down in introducing one grotesque inmate after another. The camera keeps constantly moving as we're ushered deeper into the hospital and an army of more bizarre characters appear and perform. The sets are outstanding, the technical qualities are way above average but I couldn't complete watching the movie because of a pounding headache produced by non-stop mass of nut jobs. Still, I plan to give this Mexican import another try and slow it down now and then to try and understand this stand-out movie again. It all made me think of Fellini and Ken Russell on speed--which is a good thing in this case
