Hard Surfaces (2017)
7/10
Surprisingly Good
22 September 2019
I began watching Hard Surfaces with the same expectation I usually have when I opt for an indy film, i.e., I'm hopeful it will be good but don't expect much. Well, despite its predictability, HS turned out to be quite engrossing. I think this has to do largely with the main character who, whether by how he is written in the script or how the actor plays him, is quite a nice guy despite the potential for him to be a real a-hole. Something about his face drew me in. But herein also lies what I felt was a really incongruous piece in the film: when he decides to get clean and undergoes detox which we don't see, it's as if somehow by magic he got clean overnight and experienced no cravings or difficulties thereafter. He went from being serious addict to Mr. Clean and Sober just like that. Besides this, the rest of the film is definitely worth a go.
