This is a truly unique dramedy about a Southern family that feels like nothing Hollywood has ever produced. If you are from the South, you will absolutely love it. It feels honest and sincere and only gets better with every single viewing. Burt Reynolds is terrific as Grandpa, of course, but the entire cast shines. The movie, at first, seems like not much is happening, but as the film accelerates along, those small moments become comedy gold. Unlike other movies I have seen, Elbow Grease never makes fun of the South. Instead, it embraces the South using warmth and humor. These characters are astonishingly real.
Elbow Grease is definitely not your typical Southern film. It not only gets the accents right, but it is also extremely well made. The characters are so realistic making it a breath of fresh air. A masterpiece from first time director Jason Shirley.
