Analyze This (1999)
7/10
Lazy at times, but it won me over by the end

Mostly entertaining, and amusing from time to time, Analyze This is full of many tropes, but ultimately isn't a disaster due to the wonderful casting and chemistry of Crystal and DeNiro. The film can be a bit slow from time to time throughout its first 2 acts, but by the end, proves to be rather entertaining to a considerable degree. The acting from DeNiro and Crystal is quite impressive, both providing some rich dramatic and comedic performances. However, as great as the 2 of them were, their performances do feel a little unjustified, as if the movie they had been acting in was far more different than how it turned out to be. The film is full of tropes, cliches, and many other formulaic attributes for comedies that make it seem rather generic at times and even lazy. This is most disappointing, not only considering the talent involved in the film, but the fact that it had such a unique and interesting premise as well. That being said, the humor in the film from time to time (especially by the end) is quite appreciated, although to be fair not all of it quite lands as much as it wants to. The third act feels very strange in comparison to the first two, and quite honestly feels like someone else directed it entirely, cause it is simply much better executed and a lot more humorous and genuine. In the end, Analyze This has plenty of flaws on the inside that keep it from being a far better film and comedy. However, the film balances just enough star power charisma, jokes, and surprisingly moving qualities to find its way into a watchable and somewhat enjoyable romp of a time. It's not perfect, but it has its moments, and it ends really well. My Rating: 7.5/10
