Lassie (1994)
9/10
A beautiful and engaging film that deserves a much higher rating

Why does this film have a 5.9 rating? Because I just watched it and I'll admit I cried especially towards the end. Yes, there were other Lassie-related stuff back at the 1950s even though I was just a kid in the 90s, but I might get a chance to watch those someday. Now, back to the movie.

I wasn't expecting a family friendly film that would be so well-received and yet other people gave it mixed reactions. Maybe it's because of the same kid who befriends a pet cliche that's been done so many times, but at least this film does something different. Yes, the film could've been a little bit longer, but that's my only quibble. Everything else is good.

The cinematography is beautiful and so is the scenery, the editing is very good, the music score from the late Basil Poledouris (who composed Conan The Barbarian, Robocop, Free Willy, and Les Miserables) is hopeful and emotive which makes for a lovely musical narrative, the directing is very nice, and the acting from everyone involved is also good. Tom Guiry (known for playing Scott Smalls in the cult film The Sandlot), does a fine job as Matthew and everyone else including Helen Slater and Michelle Williams (who you may recognize in films like Oz, the Great and Powerful and The Greatest Showman) do a fine job too. And the ending... my god, the ending. It was so sad I now understand why many people put it on their lists of the most saddest movie moments in history.

Seriously, this film deserves a much higher rating than that. So, my recommendation, go check out Lassie and prepare to get some tissues.
