Catch My Soul (1974)

Strange version of Othello, Not for Everyone..!!
29 July 2020
Catch my Soul penetrates the armor of the blunt. Not by virtue of its brilliant direction or cinematography, but on an irresistible charm of back to back songs and the film balances it perfectly. The film takes place in a hippie community near New Mexico and it feels like a British stage show with incredible performance by Richie Havens as Othello and Season Hubley as Desdemona, Lance LeGault's (Lago) and Susan Tyrell's Emilia. Catch my Soul (1974) is film that in its first appearance hardly anyone saw it during the release due to critics poor rating and still considered to a lost gem. This film is suitably enjoyed wearing a smoke coat and slippers, preferably with a pipe and drinks on hand. The smile on the characters face comes by itself. There is something about this musical that goes straight to the heart. I don't know what to say. It's a really cool movie, unlike pretty much other version of Shakespeare's Othello I have ever seen before. I guess I would say, watch it if you are interested in seeing something that is pretty far out there. I just realized I didn't talk at all about the cinematography and set design, which is probably going to be the main appeal for everyone. They flip from one "genuinely fantastic" shot to the next "genuinely fantastic" shot. Seriously, though, the cinematography is some of the best I have ever seen, and it definitely compliments the bizarreness of the movie along with one of the most interesting soundtracks I think anyone has ever made.
