Escape from Sobibor (1987 TV Movie)
7/10
A heavy-hitting World War II drama...
2 August 2020
I had the chance to sit down to watch, thought not for the first time, the 1987 movie "Escape from Sobibor". I could only remember fragments of the movie, as it has been many years since I saw it the first time.

Turns out that director Jack Gold's 1987 movie was actually more than just your average World War II movie. This was, in fact, a movie that made a lasting impression, especially since it is based on real events, and it deals with a very heavy issue of the Nazi death camps of the World War II. So "Escape from Sobibor" was more than just a movie for entertainment, it was also a tribute to those that died and survived at Sobibor and the other death and labor camps during World War II.

I will say that the story told in "Escape from Sobibor", while being rather brutal, was also a story that struck right to the heart. This is something that we must never quiet or forget. And the storyline of these atrocities of war and heroic efforts of those captured was told in a very good way; a way that proved to be entertaining as a movie, but also as a reminder of things in history that we cannot and must not forget.

"Escape from Sobibor" has a great cast and have some really amazing performances by the likes of Alan Arkin, Rutger Hauer, Jack Shepherd and Linal Haft. I must say that I really was enjoying the performances of the actors and actresses in the movie all together.

One thing that was a shame though, as it took away something of the authenticity, was the fact that the German soldiers in the movie were speaking English but with that stereotypical thick German accent. Had they opted for the German language, it would have been much more impactful.

If you haven't already seen "Escape from Sobibor", you definitely should take the time and effort to do so, even if you are not overly keen on World War II movies. This is a drama that gets inside and sticks with you for a long time.

I am rating "Escape from Sobibor" a solid seven out of ten stars.
