Uneven experience with moments of brilliance

Drunken Master stars Jackie Chan as Wong Fei-hung, an impetuous and arrogant yet goodhearted young martial artist and Yuen Siu-Tin as Beggar So, Fei-hung's teacher and the master of Drunken Fist Style. Fei-hung is sent away by his father after one disgrace too many, but he's then taken under the wing of So and taught the true meaning of kung fu as well the secret teachings of The Eight Drunken Immortals.

The film is rather episodic in nature. There is a red line running throughout it all, but there are many scenes that have no connection to the plot at all. Rather they're just Fei-hung messing around, getting into trouble and fighting his way out of it. Or getting his ass handed to him, as it sometimes goes.

The best part of this film are those fight, easily. Young Jackie Chan is already at the top of his game and as a result every single fight scene in this film is superb. Every fight scene this film have would receive praise in a modern film.

That being said, it is very episodic, which impacts the storytelling. You don't get to know the characters as well as you'd hope. You almost get the feeling like this is an adaptation. Like you're halfway expected to know these characters already so not as much explanation is needed. Which makes the film feel a tad detached.

Still, I did enjoy it. Its story wasn't the greatest, but it had cool fight scenes, fun characters and good comedy. Recommended.
