The Natural (1984)
7/10
Baseball Fairytale

Warning: Spoilers
The Natural has its flaws but at its heart it is a magical and heartwarming movie that tremendously glorifies the wonderful sport of baseball. Redford plays the Roy Hobbs, a prodigious talent who only gets his shot for glory later in life. While ownership and sportswriters are negatively depicted, Roy, and his unbridled love for the game is enchanting. In fact, the movie plays out almost like a fairytale with a fantastically emotional score, dramatic slow-motion set pieces, and an athlete with almost unnatural skill.

There are some slow parts to movie and much of what happens outside of the actual baseball scenes are average at best. The scene where Roy gets shot is shocking to those unfamiliar with the plot and came out of nowhere for me. A little more explanation about the motivations of the shooter would have been appreciated but the shock value made the scene great. This is a tremendously iconic and emotionally affecting sports movie that ends on a high note.
