Review of Locke & Key

Locke & Key (2020–2022)
8/10
A good supernatural drama

This Netflix series is centred on the Locke family. Mother Nina and her children Tyler, Kinsey and Bode move to the family home, Keyhouse, in Massachusetts after father Rendell is murdered. Keyhouse is a massive colonial era mansion where supernatural occurrences are rumoured to occur. One day Bode hears a voice coming from the well; it tells him that the house contains a number of magical keys; each with a different power. He soon finds one which lets the use pass through a door and exit through any other they think of... unfortunately for Bode the 'Well Lady' tricks him and takes it from him. She is after a particular key; Bode, with the help of his siblings will have to try to get it first. Along the way they will find more keys; some useful, others dangerous but always magical.

I know there are a lot of negative reviews but I really enjoyed this series. The set-up is dealt with quickly and efficiently then the adventure starts. It nicely mixes the magical with the mundane as the children must deal with ordinary life in a new town while also having a supernatural adventure. It was exciting each time a new key was discovered as one never knows what it will do... although the shape of the key gives a clue. While there is nothing too scary going on there are plenty of good scares and tense scenes. The setting is atmospheric; especially Keyhouse with its gothic look and myriad rooms. I thought the cast did an impressive job bringing their characters to life. Some reviewers complain of plot holes but I didn't really see this; yes characters sometimes make silly decisions but then so do people in real life... and sometimes it needs to be this way to keep the story going. Overall I'd certainly recommend this series; I'm certainly looking forward to the second season.
