French Exit (2020)

well that turned quirky

Warning: Spoilers
Widower Frances Price (Michelle Pfeiffer) is running out of money. The former New York socialite is an outcast due to some previous malfeasance. She has to sell everything. She and her son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) are being thrown out of their apartment. Her friend Joan offers them her empty Paris apartment. Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) can do nothing but join her. He can't even tell her that he's marrying Susan (Imogen Poots) who is utterly frustrated with his acquiescence to his mother.

This starts like a loving indie of a mother son relationship. When the cross Atlantic cruise emerges, that's the start of the quirkiness and this movie turns real quirky. I like the quirkiness but maybe it should start the movie with that. It should start with the cat and the dead body. That would set up the movie morbid humor and dark quirkiness. I do like all the relationships. As for Pfeiffer, she does a good mean queen. I do wonder if somebody should dump a bowl of soup on her. The start needs to be better. I do like the Paris half more.
