the Red Nichols story
20 September 2021
Danny Kaye tells the story of jazzman Red Nichols. Started in Ogden Uah, moved to the bigger cities. His wife is played by Barbara BelGeddes, probably best known as Mom, on Dallas. Although the best part of this film is multi-talented Louie Armstrong showing off his stuff. A sixteen year old Tuesday Weld is daughter Dorothy. Weld will be nominated for Mr. Goodbar, years later. And was on Dobie GIllis, of course. There's a quickie appearance by Bob Hope, who actually worked with Red for years. Co-stars Bob Crosby, Bing's brother; it pretty much sounds like Bing when he sings and this was Bob's last film appearance. It's all rather silly and over the top. According to the film, Nichols was always too full of himself, and put his emotions and temper before everyone. Even his new bride's feelings. Which cost him many jobs. With life's ups and downs, he leaves music for a while. Later, he puts together his own group, the five pennies (get it... Nichols and the Five Pennies). Was hugely successful. Even made it to Vegas. Directed by Melville Shavelson. Twice nominated.
