Dark Matter: Episode #1.13 (2015)
Season 1, Episode 13

It is what it is

After the previous episode or two, this finale felt a bit mediocre. The previous episode was one of my favorites. It felt like *finally* we're getting some actual mythology and we're going someplace. It made me feel like so much time was wasted on filler over the season. Entire shows fighting faceless drones. Everyone being way too serious, just filling their tropey role and being two dimensional. No wit or humor to break things up. I realize eventually the traitor had to be revealed and it's my second time watching so I knew who the traitor was. When you know who it is, you can sit back and pick up on details you missed the first time. It just feels like the reveal was not done in an interesting way and way too much time was spent running in circles, just more filler to get to the final reveal.

It also really emphasized the weakness of the characters and writing. There's lots of time in this episode to be more annoyed by how whiny and wushu washy One and Five are. How one dimensionally grumpy and unsmart Two is. To notice how Four is just written out of the way for so much of the show in general- and you're not missing him much because he has even less dimension than Two. Three is about the only one I root for (other than the Android) and I think that's all a credit to the skill and charisma of the actor who can do a lot with not much of a script.

Before writing about this finale, I was going to give this episode a 7 but I realize it doesn't deserve to be that high. At least there finally was a reveal, but it is pretty anticlimactic the farther you get away from it. All that running around the ship just emphasized how uninspired the set designs are and how cardboard and soulless the world is the characters inhabit. At least this time around I can go straight to the next season instead of having to wait several months while thinking about all the show's flaws.
