Season One Review

I feel like I accidentally watched all of this season. I kept meaning to stop, because it's really not good but every so often there was moment that meant I hung in there - and two episodes in particularly, the two most different from the usual tedious stuff were worth watching.

With a major expansion due to be released for their successful MMORPG "Mythic Quest" the staff of the production studio are feeling the pressure. The stressed lead programmer Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) is butting heads with the creative director Ian (Rob McElhenney) over mechanics of a shovel function. Financial director Brad (Danny Pudi) is looking for ways to monetise the new area the game and the games in house writer, CW (F Murray Abraham) is looking for anyway to contribute. All decisions though fall to executive producer David (David Hornsby) but decisions under pressure aren't his strength.

As I said, for the most part, I generally thought that "Mythic Quest" was pretty rubbish. Despite the setting offering the opportunity for some different issues, mostly its dull cliché office based jokes and it's surprisingly pedestrian to say that the minds behind "It's Always Sunny . ." are involved with it. Tonally it's odd too, often replacing shouting for jokes, especially in the earlier episodes, but this does calm down as the show runs on.

However, then you reach the 5th episode. A seemingly entirely unrelated story about a pair of game developers played by Jake Johnson and Cristin Milloti, from a couple of decades earlier that is just brilliant. Tonally spot on, genuinely funny, and touching that makes you wish the main show was more like that one. The quarantine special is the second best episode, and I'd hope that it points towards a better, less obvious show for the second season.
