Toad Road (2012)

Stunning

Seeing some of the poor reviews here makes me deeply sad. As a viewer I felt the soul which was poured into this movie. This is my favorite movie I have ever seen. It felt very relatable to my own struggle with addiction and the non scripted bits and hand filmed bits only made it feel more real. The message is right on the nose for what falling into addiction feels like. At the beginning you feel others watching you and are keenly aware of their eyes. You feel ashamed. You fall into a deeper and deeper mania until finally you've reached hell. For addicts this is that place right before rock bottom where you are so invested in your drug that any piece of you that wanted to get clean goes silent. There is nothing outside of using. In hell nothing matters. Your aspirations shames and guilts are muted or dancing around you like shadows. I don't know. This movie seemed to really capture the ugliest parts of addiction without fear mongering or overly stigmatizing in a way that villifies users. I just think it's stunning.
