The Hardy Boys (2020–2023)
7/10
Kind of Stranger Things style. It was actually alright. Looking forward to seeing season two!

Warning: Spoilers
Frank and Joe's mother dies, and later they believe she was murdered. This starts the whole premise of the first season as they investigate what happened.

Just have to say, right off the bat, that I am reminded a lot of Stranger Things(ST) in the way the style of the tale is told. First of all, it's the 80s. I think around the mid-80s. They play a lot of music from that time period. The story is told over 13 episodes, where everything converges near the end, just like ST. There is some similar music, a bit at times, especially when a major discovery is made or a major event happens. The story revolves around an "otherworldly" artifact. Kids are at the center of the story. There's a secret society. There's the whole smalltown scenario with mysterious going-ons. I mean it's kind of a cheap knock-off of ST, but the show is actually alright.

All the acting is ok. Frank seems so vanilla. The actor plays him with a lot of gravitas. I generally don't like vanilla characters, but I like Frank. Joe is very charismatic and likable. My favorite character was JB Cox. I think he was a take on D. B. Cooper. He made me laugh. I was totally rooting for him to get the entire artifact or at least a piece. Lol. I hope he's back in season two. He reminds me of Autolycus from Xena & Hercules. The thief with a heart of gold. I kept racking my brain trying to figure out where I'd seen Aunt Trudy before. Then it hit me in episode 8 that she's in Murdoch Mysteries, playing Louise Cherry. One of my favorite shows of all time.

A few things: Frank & Joe's dad didn't have a good look leaving his kids right after their mother was killed. Not to mention all of them moving right away to a new town. Joe and Frank's bicycles looked too small. Frank looks a little silly on it. Frank's folded-up jeans all the time seemed odd. I'm a kid of the 80s, that isn't a time-specific thing or a trend that surged. The show may be set in the 80s and they have the music and no cell phones or computer, but yet it doesn't really capture the 80s feeling like ST does.

The first episode, I think, is the weakest, yet compelling enough to make me watch the next episode. I think, coming from losing my mother this year, it all seemed too fast for the boys picking up and moving. They had no quiet time to reflect. People were expecting to come out and say goodbye right after the wake. I mean they're kids. They didn't go through their mother's things there in the house. There wasn't very much crying by Frank, Joe, and their dad. To be fair, this episode is set-up for the premise of season one. So they had to get a lot in and get Frank & Joe over to the small town all in one episode.

There's a quiet mysterious feel to the show that I like. I like the season-long mystery style. I hope they keep that format. I like the puzzle and clues journey. I actually like that not everything is moving fast, and prefer the slower pace of the show, which gives time for the characters to develop & interact and the story to be built. I prefer to watch not dark gritty things these days, so this fits the bill. It's not just for kids. If you like Stranger Things, you possibly... might like this. No, it's definitely not as excellent, but still, it's good, imo. 7/10.
