The American Friend
13 February 2022
Dealer in forged art, Ripley (Dennis Hopper) decides to make a bit more cash by getting involved in a murder. He finds the best man for the hit is picture framer Bruno Ganz who has little time to live and wants to leave some money for his wife and son. Things do not of course go quite to plan.

Compelling and naturally paced thriller with Hopper, playing more like Hopper than Ripley, and Ganz, trying their best to kill the targets but without the necessary experience which results in considerable tension - Ganz' first hit is genuinely nail biting. Exciting and occasionally amusing, this is worth seeing, although despite a fab central performance by Ganz, this is far from Wenders' finest work.
