Hemingway's WWI Italian love story that didn't seem to warrant sympathy.

Not as romantic as the Gary Cooper version, but they did do a little better job with the story...explaining why Catherine would sleep with a stranger. I am not sure I bought the romance between Jennifer Jones and Rock Hudson.

This is Hemingway's classic story about an American Ambulance driver working for Italy during WWI who meets and falls in love with a British nurse.

"Just for a bottle of brandy you'd make an honest woman of me?"

"Aren't you embarrassed about not being married?"

"Every soldier feels he had the right to walk out on any dame he captures while in the service of his country."

This seemed more modern with Katherine telling him about the baby and the mention of venereal diseases by the doctor. There was some odd humor (I assume it was meant to be funny).

I loved the interesting shots of Italy. But I am not sure that I am approving of using the red cross' quarters for sex and boozing. This film really brought them out as unsympathetic characters.
