Is this film as good as the original "Rugrats" TV show? Check out my review below to find out!

"The Rugrats Movie" (1998), for those who may not know, I watched the show, "Rugrats" (1991-2004) all the time as a kid and enjoyed it quite a lot. Now, it wasn't perfect by any means, the series as a whole is hit or miss for me, much like "The Rugrats Movie". Keep in mind, back when I was growing up, this film was a lot of fun! That being said, watching it again as an adult, it unfortunately doesn't hold up that well. It has a weak yet confusing storyline, and a predictable cliched soundtrack. The plot is, Tommy's mother has a new baby, cleverly named Dil Pickles and then he gets a new brother. After a failed attempt by him and his friends to get rid of Dil, they all get lost in the woods and have to find their way home. That sounds like a simple enough story, which is warranted for a movie like this. However, for the most part, it's a bit too simple and it drags on for way too long during certain scenes. The other big issue with the plot, is the musical numbers. When, at any point, was this film advertised to be a musical? Some of the numbers are okay, but the majority of them add nothing to the story and slow the pacing down. On top of that, the songs they sing just appear randomly and out of nowhere. Even without these musical numbers, the storyline would still be weak as a whole. Now, there are some good parts throughout the movie. Such as: the scene where the babies ride around in the Reptar wagon, and the scene where Tommy and Dil finally warm up to each other as brothers, and when Tommy sings the same lullaby their parents sang to them earlier in the film. No matter how many times you watch that scene, it will never not be emotional. That's another problem with the plot, the tone is inconsistent. However, it's not that bad if you can manage to get through the obnoxious or slow scenes. As for the soundtrack, it's overall just cliched and predictable. The film score for this movie was written and composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, who happened to do the music for the original TV series. Yes, it is exactly what you expect it to be. The problem with that, is that he doesn't try to expand upon it, to make it unique to the film. It's way too pedestrian, and even sounds lazy at times. There are some good parts to the soundtrack, but at the end of the day, it's not very memorable. Now, let's get to the good elements in this movie, what do you say? As for the voice acting, it's nothing short of top-notch from the whole entire cast. Just like in the original TV show, the voice acting is sublime! Some of my favorite voice actors/actresses of all-time are involved in this film. My personal favorites here, are: E. G. Daily, Tara Strong, Kath Soucie and Tress MacNeille. But, the rest of the cast does just as good a job as they do! They all bring their respectable character(s) to life and make you personally care for them. Finally, the animation for this movie is beautifully done and it makes you feel like you're watching the TV show. Plus, 2D animation beats 3D any day! "The Rugrats Movie" is fun to watch as a kid. I think any child would enjoy it, just like I did. Sadly, it doesn't hold up as an adult, which is a real shame to me. I'm giving this film 3 out of 5 stars on my personal scale, which equates to 6 out of 10 IMDB stars. A 3 out of 5 star rating is dividing mark where I differentiate a movie being good or bad. "The Rugrats Movie" is a just below the mark. So, by my standards, I consider it to be a bad film. This is one of those movies that's a bit hard for me to recommend. But, if you're a child, go ahead and check it out! However, if you get into the original TV series first, it'll make this film and it's sequel that much more enjoyable. I am glad I got to see "The Rugrats Movie" as an adult, but I don't think I'll be seeing it again anytime soon.
