Review of Sweet Girl

Sweet Girl (2021)
6/10
I still liked it

I saw that this movie was on Netflix, and I didn't watch for a while. It looked kind of dumb, I guess. Well, as everyone with a Netflix subscription knows, you eventually end up watching all those movies you passed up. There just isn't enough of a selection that you can indefinitely put off all those Netflix originals.

When I eventually gave in, I had low expectations and mostly just wanted to see a Jason Momoa movie. He was pretty good in this. Every time I see him in a movie, I like him more. He seems like an interesting person, and his action sequences are pretty good.

The movie isn't really all that good, but it was entertaining. It's got some silly plot twists, and it seems to work mostly off of dream logic. It was written by the guy who wrote Event Horizon, so maybe that's why I liked it. Event Horizon was entertaining for what it was.

There's a lot more acting and plot than I expected in this movie. I kept waiting for the movie to kick into overdrive, but there's a bit of buildup before that happens. If you're expecting non-stop action at a breakneck pace, this might not be the best choice. The fight choreography is good, though, and it's always nice to get some plot and characterization mixed in.

The daughter was pretty good. Despite being the "sweet girl" referenced by the title, I wasn't really expecting a lot -- basically that she'd be a plot device -- but she gets to kick some ass, too. If you're willing to accept the movie's dream logic and silliness, there's something here.
