Persuasion (I) (2022)
6/10
I could be persuaded to watch this again, 6/10

The adorable rabbit in the movie looks like one of the ones I had when I was a kid... RIP William! Mind you, I have no idea why it's here, (is it symbolic of something? I can't tell?) but it's so cute that it gets a pass.

Apart from the rabbit, the best thing about this film is definitely Dakota Johnson. She's absolutely great- she's got a twinkle in her eye, and she's very charming, almost enough to sell the of the strange and uncomfortable 'modern' additions to the writing.

That said, some of them are just too much. The 'playlist' of classical sheet music, and the way someone describes another character as 'a 10' might seem like small things, but each time they happen they just feel so... off.

Also, while I did enjoy quite a few of the characters, there are quite a few that are just detestable, and a couple that I couldn't make my mind up about. Particularly Mary, who was quite the horrible person, but the performance managed to make her narcissism fun to watch.

Another thing I liked a lot about Persuasion was the look of it. The scenery was absolutely beautiful and really nicely photographed, so even at the times when the story dragged or detoured a little bit too much (around the halfway mark) there was always something nice to look at. In particular, the very opening shot is just lovely, and really sets a nice tone along with the soundtrack, which by the way, is extremely pretty.

Overall, I found the movie quite enjoyable, especially visually, although there are definitely times when it is slightly too slow, and there it's undeniable there are a few writing problems. Despite that though, the story was nice, the acting was great, and I can't say I didn't like watching it.
