"The Immigrant" was released in 1917. Charlie Chaplin played an immigrant who sailed to American with a shipload of other European immigrants. It was very indicative of the times although the flow of European immigrants slowed tremendously between 1914 and 1918 due to World War I.

Nevertheless, Chaplin rode the choppy seas with other westward hopefuls and made some money gambling on the way. He also found love on his boat ride. He reached U. S. soil where he ate well and re-encountered the woman (Edna Purviance) he so desired.

This film didn't rely on physical comedy quite as much as some of his others. The funniest part of the movie was him trying to figure out a way to pay for his meal whether by hook or crook.
