5/10
Extremely disappointed

Warning: Spoilers
Let me say from the outset I absolutely loved the book. But the film treatment was appalling and cliched in the extreme.

So many sub-stories, so many plotlines veering off strangely and seriously under-written characters. The viewer doesn't know enough about them to care about what happens to them. And there are far too many of them.

Each emotional moment is wrung out for all it's worth and sorry, the AJ Fikry of the book would be appalled at the bed hopping.

One irritating thing also, with AJ running around so much it begs the question who was taking care of Maya? That was never shown.

The marriage dynamic was also never shown, did she still work, running all over the state?

Underneath it all was the film that should be made, of the book. Simple and meaningful and honouring the viewer so that they stay involved. And I remember in the book Maya was just a tiny baby on the counter of the bookshop for a very long time engaging all the bookshop visitors much to the owner's annoyance..

5/10 for the efforts of the two leads with a limp script and the island's beauty.
