Director Jess Franco has a rather dubious reputation but this is far from awful

"L'Horrible Docteur Orlof" Evil Dr Orloff (Franco regular Howard Vernon), assisted by his blind henchman Morpho, abducts young women from the streets of Paris so that he can graft their faces onto that of his disfigured daughter. This is an early Spanish movie but for censorship reasons the story had to be set in Paris, France. The movie combines Gothic horror (Orloff lives in an old castle), mad scientist, a touch of Jack the Ripper and a police investigation. Bug eyed Morpho (Ricardo Valle) is a very memorable character, often appearing in books and other literature on horror movies. The film has plenty of atmosphere, helped by a spooky soundtrack. In uncut form it is pretty explicit for its time, it has a couple of scenes of violence against topless females. And talking of females there are several beautiful ones amongst the cast. Sadly the dubbing on the English language version is terrible, however as Franco movies go this one is good.
