88 (II) (2015)
8/10
What's the problem with the rating system here?

88 has quite a bad pedigree. Here on IMDB it has 4,8 and only 23 reviews with mostly negative scores. Yet last October I saw it and it excedded so much my expectations that I asked myself if I was watching the same movie they all seem to hate. Now I can go to the review.

Gwen (Katherine Isabelle) is a young woman that suffered a fugue state and shoots a waitress in a diner when she accidentallly finds a gun in her purse. After this accident Gwen goes in a motel and she is visited by Ty who insists that they previously planned to kill underworld boss Cyrus (Christopher Lloyd) because he was the responsible of the death of her boyfriend. Unfortunately when Gwen and Ty go to buy more weapons they are stopped by Sheriff Knowles (Michael Ironside) but he makes a deal: Gwen has to take Cyrus alive to him. Skip to some time later, Gwen meets Cyrus and blames him for all the deaths but he denies his responsibility and kills himself, and at the dinner Gwen enters in a daze.

So is 88 worth deserving of the bad score and reviews? Not really. It was a tense and convincing thriller with some nice twists and good performances by Isabelle, Ironside (in his natural element) and Lloyd (who is surprising here since he is mostly known for comedies). In some moments I was even anxious for seeing where everything went next, so how they dare to call this a bad movie?

My advice in the end is to watch this movie for yourselves without reading the reviews, then if you want say your own view about it here. I liked it, and if you are thriller fans you might like it as well. Another movie I really liked but here is hugely underrated.
