Coping with the loss of a spouse
18 February 2023
7.1 stars.

"One Summer" is about how to move on after losing a spouse. Specifically, Jack has recently lost his wife. Daughter, Mikki is 15 and son Tyler seems to be about 8. "One Summer" doesn't go into how children deal with the loss of a parent as much as a husband's struggle after losing his wife. He and the kids spend a summer where his wife grew up in a beach town. Her parents still live there, and there is tension between mother-in-law and Jack. We don't know anything about Jack's parents, so let's assume they are dead, because in Hallmark films most parents are dead by the time someone reaches 40.

This is a sad and depressing story, no way around it. The best part of this movie, in my opinion, is the daughter's singing and guitar playing. These musical moments are most tender but unfortunately are too few.

Jack and Mikki struggle to connect after their loss and it takes much effort to mend their relationship. I imagine this would be a most difficult situation for a single dad raising a 15 year old teenage girl, and equally as frustrating for Mikki, I'm sure.

They meet Jenna and her son Liam. Jenna and Jack are somewhat attracted to each other. Jenna owns a diner in town. Liam and Mikki also share an attraction, which is kinda awkward, but somehow it all pans out in the end.

There is also the life after death side plot which is probably a sore subject for a lot of viewers. This movie is not fun, not happy, and only somewhat entertaining. Something about the story keeps you wanting to see how it all turns out, and I can't figure out what it was that kept me watching "One Summer". What it contains is a very sound lesson for all of us which you will see on a wall in the old house and it reads "seas the day".
